The SMS program described on this page is documented for transparency and is currently awaiting Twilio A2P/10DLC carrier registration approval. No SMS messages are sent from StationHQ at this time. Once carrier registration completes, the program will operate exactly as described below — until then, this page is published for review and reference only.
What This Page Covers
This page describes the SMS (text message) program operated by StationHQ (owned by JDX Group LLC) for fire and EMS department members. It documents the opt-in flow, the types of messages sent, message frequency, cost, and opt-out procedures, in compliance with Twilio's Toll-Free messaging policies and US carrier requirements.
SMS is strictly opt-in. No one receives a text message from StationHQ unless they have explicitly toggled on "SMS Alerts" inside the StationHQ mobile app after reading the consent language.
Program Description
Who We Are
StationHQ is a member management application for volunteer and career fire departments and EMS agencies in the United States. Each department operates its own instance within the app. Members are authenticated volunteers and employees of that specific department.
Who Receives Messages
Only members who (a) have an active StationHQ account tied to a real department, (b) have provided a mobile number on their profile, and (c) have explicitly opted in to SMS alerts in the app's Settings. Messages are scoped to the member's own department — we do not cross-send, sell, or share numbers.
Message Categories
- Emergency / Urgent callouts — structure fires, MVA, water rescue, mutual aid, etc.
- Drill callouts — scheduled or ad-hoc drill announcements
- Meeting notices — monthly meetings, committee meetings, board meetings
- Training reminders — training class schedules, certification deadlines
- Dues and payment reminders — annual dues, charges, fundraiser dues
Opt-In Flow (In-App Consent)
Consent is captured inside the StationHQ mobile app. The exact text a user sees before enabling the SMS switch is shown below. This consent language is presented in a dedicated "SMS Alerts" card within Settings → Notifications. The language is not buried in Terms of Service or Privacy Policy — it is displayed plainly next to the opt-in control itself.
How the Toggle Works
- Default state: OFF for every new member account
- The toggle remains OFF by default even if a phone number is on file
- Turning the toggle ON records the member's consent along with the date and time it was given
- Turning the toggle OFF immediately stops all outbound SMS to that member's number
- Removing the phone number from profile also disables SMS, even if the toggle is on
Message Frequency & Cost
Message volume depends entirely on the operational activity of the member's department:
- Emergency callouts: unpredictable — can range from zero in quiet months to several per day during high-activity periods (hurricane season, brush fire season, etc.)
- Drills and meetings: typically 1–4 per month
- Dues reminders: a few times per year, concentrated near due dates
Msg & data rates may apply. StationHQ does not charge the member for SMS. Standard rates from the member's mobile carrier may apply to received texts. Members with unlimited SMS plans incur no additional cost.
